KIT x HighSpin

By 28 February 2025Senza categoria

Within the HighSpin project, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is playing a key role in the development of new technologies to improve the performance and sustainability of future batteries.

The KIT research team, led by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Pfleging, is working to take battery technology to a new level with ambitious goals:

🔄 Doubling the service life of batteries
⚡ Increase energy density by 30% while maintaining high power density
💰 Reduce production costs
🌱 Minimise environmental impact and carbon footprint

‘The research conducted within HighSpin will take battery technology to the next stage of development.’

The KIT team has introduced innovative solutions to address battery design challenges. These include an innovative approach to electrode design:

🛠 Laser electrode structuring, which improves lithium-ion diffusion and optimises battery performance.
💨 Electrode support to allow the electrode to ‘breathe’ during electrochemical cycling, compensating for volume variations of up to 300%.

‘We found that laser structuring not only serves to increase the active surface area, but also improves the diffusion kinetics of lithium ions.’

One of the most exciting aspects of the HighSpin project is the contribution of laser technology and the involvement of the next generation of scientists.

🔬 Lasers are a key technology for the development of more efficient and sustainable batteries.
🎓 HighSpin is an opportunity for students to discover their passion for laser technology and grow both personally and scientifically.

‘What excites me the most is seeing the personal and scientific development of so many young people who have discovered their passion for laser technology.’
